Being a telco is not easy in this day and age. The competition, not just from other telcos but also from service providers of all sorts, is fierce. And the downward pressures on bandwidth prices is heavy while costs continue to rise. Consequently, telcos have for years been trying to clamber out of the bit-carrier's gravity well into the wide open spaces of value-added service provision. Most have not succeeded, as other companies have proven more nimble and in greater touch with the needs of customers.
