Cloud computing without all the fog — who benefits, how soon, how much and why?
Cloud computing is all the rage. Instead, of major investment in the full suite of corporate IT infrastructure, hardware and software, you simply provide your workforce with online access to a subscription IT service.
Cloud computing leaves you free to concentrate on running your business, with the service providers taking full responsibility for managing, maintaining and updating the IT infrastructure. In theory you only pay for what you use, and the service scales to meet demand as fast as needed.
- But what becomes of the in-house IT department once every desktop is plumbed for ”mains IT”?
- What about data security when you don’t know where it’s being processed? The Canadian government, for example, has a policy of not allowing public sector IT projects to use US-based hosting services because of concerns over data protection under the US Patriot Act.
- When is the Cloud not a cloud, and when is it just Application Service Provision under a new name?
- What size and type of organization is best served by the Cloud? And how long does it take to get pay-back?
- Does Cloud computing mark the death of the mainframe or, as a new report from Wintergreen Research suggests, will the inherent reliability, security and cost-effectiveness of the mainframe make it a significant part of the cloud infrastructure?
- Last year McKenzie predicted that 60% of all SMOs will be using the Cloud by 2010 – is that forecast still on track?
These are just a few of the many questions surrounding the Cloud, and this week you’ll find most of the answers on NetEvent TV’s special edition, beginning with our
Exclusive documentary on The Cloud.
In this documentary Manek Dubash chairs a round table discussion in search of definitive answers.
